The Art of Pakistani Goldsmithing

Master goldsmith working in traditional Lahore jewelry workshop

Pakistani goldsmithing (known as zargar) is a craft passed down through generations of skilled artisan families. The main jewelry-making centres in Pakistan are Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, Hyderabad and Multan — each with its own distinctive style.

Lahore is renowned for elaborate Mughal-style Kundan and Polki work — embedding uncut precious stones in gold foil. The old city's Androon Lahore bazaars still house dozens of hereditary goldsmith families.

Sindh and Hyderabad produce bold, geometric gold pieces with red and green enamel work (known as meenakari), while Peshawar's Qissa Khwani Bazaar has been a centre of heavy Pashtun gold jewelry for centuries.

The hallmarking system, administered by Pakistan's standards authority, ensures consumers receive accurately purity-stamped gold jewelry. Pakistani gold is typically sold by weight based on the daily gold rate plus making charges.
